In 1973 he was appointed as a lecturer at Zagazig University until he received his master's degree in 1980 He then traveled to the United States on a doctoral mission which he received in 1986 from the University of Assiut Kansas and in 1990 received the rank of Assistant Professor and in 1996 he earned a degree in economics from the University of Zagazig
After receiving his doctorate he was appointed advisor to the Minister of Economy from 1986 to 1992 He was an advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation from 1987 to 1992 . In 1988, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of Suez Canal Bank and also a member of TDIC In 1990 he was appointed as the governor of the Central Bank of Egypt and as the first executive director of the Egyptian Institute of Banking and continued his position until 1992 . In 1992 he was appointed economic adviser to the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development He continued his position until 1999 and was appointed deputy governor of the Central Bank In 2001 he was appointed governor of the bank During his tenure as governor he ran into a dispute with Prime Minister Atef Ebeid, who rejected the idea of independence and intervened in his work The prime minister also liberalized the exchange rate All of which led to his dismissal from office in December 2003
After his dismissal he left Egypt for Kuwait where he worked as an adviser to the state to prepare the economic study of the strategic port of Boubyan Mubarak al-Kabir Port In December 2004 he was appointed as a senior adviser to the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development In 2006 he was appointed as Advisor to the Kuwaiti Minister of Finance He continued his position until 2010 when he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the International Bank of Kuwait until he resigned in 2011
